Around fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.

Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.

The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.

Police then found numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Police say initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.

A high-ranking political figure said the incident rendered him without words and needed to be solved promptly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
