EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
