Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
